OUR CHALLENGE
The Barzilai Medical Center is located in Ashkelon, Israel, only 6.2 miles from the volatile Gaza border. It is the home of significant programs and advancements in Oncology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Vascular Cardiology, and much more.
Despite its many achievements, it still has the lowest hospital bed rate per capita in all of Israel, and it is constantly occupied at 150% capacity. Though it is intended and expected to function as a regular operating hospital and teaching facility, it is often unable to do so, as its facilities are constantly being transformed in order to accommodate civilians and soldiers wounded by the frequent rocket showers that rain down over the hospital.

Current and future improvement plans include building new fortified structures to house an emergency room, pediatric ward, neonatal intensive care department, and stroke and oncology units, which will drastically improve the situation.
Currently, these entities are housed in the original structures from 1961, with only simple tile roofs protecting from the elements. Over $50 million is needed for the project - there is still a long way to go and it is nearly impossible for the Center to cope with and fund the necessary medical services alone.
